1915 Doctor Contest - Name this picture. In 1915 Anheuser Busch ran a contest for doctor's to name this picture. Why? Anheuser Busch had a "Malt Nutrine Department". Get the connection between beer, doctors, and babies!? The 12 1/2" x 7 1/2" sign shows a doctor walking briskly towards a lighted house. His shadow is a stork, suggesting the delivery of a baby is in order. A few speckles and two rubs behind the doctor's left foot. Colors are quite vivid, not faded. The doctor and stork image are very clear. The back is cardboard and has the following text: "This Little Picture, which we hope you will find suitable for hanging in your office or reception room, is one of a series that we will from time to time send the medical profession of the United States. You will observe the picture has no name. "Coming Events Cast Their Shadows Before" has been suggested as a title, What would you suggest? To the doctor who first gives the most appropriate title we will pay two hundred and fifty dollars ($250) in gold. Prize will be awarded Sept. 1, 1915. Answers will be duly acknowledged and the name of winner of the contest as well as the title selected will be mailed to each contestant. Address, Dr. Stork, Malt Nutrine Department, Anheuser-Busch, St. Louis, Mo." We don't know the winning name or what doctor won the gold. But we do know that this is a truly unique antique collectors item for doctors. Again, there is some discoloration and a few paint chips on the front but only consistent with the 1915 age. Nothing affects the image or impact of this unusual piece. 1915 Doctor Contest Item #DN107 - $225 |

The Oath by James Christensen--Signed Limited Edition - This is one of the best doctor lithographs we have ever seen!! For Counsel was delighted to locate a print from this series. We have sold the porcelain figurine, The Oath, for several years and are pleased to offer this signed limited edition print. For 2,400 years, physicians have honored Hippocrates' sacred vow to treat a patient with empirical, scientific wisdom and ethical consideration. However, as James C. Christensen wittily reveals in The Oath, not all aspects of medical antiquity have stood the test of time and Hippocrates could never have imagined some others. Just as attorneys everywhere warmly responded to the self-deprecating humor of Christensen's image A Lawyer More Than Adequately Attired in Fine Print, we think members of the medical profession will appreciate a healthy dose of The Oath. Accompanied by a decorative Hippocratic Oath. The image size is a wonderfully large 19.5"w X 25.5"h. The edition is limited to 2950. This one is numbered 1792. We have framed two First Day Covers--which were mailed on the day of issue--Sept 11, 1964--one with a single stamp and the other with a block of four. Frame is dimestore type but shows this Mayo stamp well. Mayo Clinic developed gradually from the medical practice of a pioneer physician, Dr. William Worrall Mayo, who settled in Rochester in 1863. His continuing dedication to medicine became a family tradition when his sons, Drs. William James Mayo and Charles Horace Mayo, joined his practice in 1883 and 1888, respectively. From the beginning, innovation was their standard and they shared a pioneering zeal and passion for medicine. As the demand for their services increased, other respected physicians and basic science researchers joined them in the world's first private integrated group practice. Give to your Mayo doctor--or, any doctor with a note like: Dr. Smith--thought you might enjoy this. Thanks for all you have done for me. You are a doctor in the Mayo tradition of excellence." Book--Stewards of Democracy - New Perspectives on Law, Culture & Society This is a special book. Professor Carrington is looking at the larger role lawyers play in American history. The book is new, never read. Jacket price is $32. Carrington, who teaches at Duke University Law School and has served as a legal advisor to the federal government, is attuned to the continuity between education, philosophy, and the legal profession. He's also attuned to the impact of that continuity on the larger social and political order and focuses his book on the role of lawyers in U.S. political history. Despite popular dislike of lawyers, Carrington's own faith in the profession is "redeemed when lawyers and judges subordinate their own political preferences to those expressed by the institutions of representative self-government." In this regard, he focuses on some of the giants of the profession: Thomas M. Cooley, Louis D. Brandeis, Ernst Freund, Learned Hand, and Byron White. These were men who were aware of their public responsibilities and could mediate the interests of the democratic majority and the monied class, and/or other minorities, with a non-self-interested bias toward the public good. Greta Garbo Dumps Lawyer Letter - 1933 - This is a rare find! A signed letter from Greta Garbo to her New York lawyer, Joseph Buhler, essentially dumping him for a California lawyer. She tells Buhler that what he has done for her is too complicated for her to understand and that New York is too far away. The 1933 letter comes with two certificates of authenticity issued by autograph dealers who have owned the letter in the past. The letter also comes with the envelope it was mailed in, clearly postmarked the day after the letter was written. The letter has two horizontal folds and shows normal yellowing from aging. There is minor soiling in two places. One lightly affects the large signature. Otherwise, the letter is in good condition. The envelope has substantial soiling (could it be that Mr. Buhler spilled his coffee when he saw the letter?!?). Letter comes nicely framed and matted. All materials touching the letter are acid free. The letter reads: "Dear Mr. Buhler: I have a great many papers which you have sent me, which I do not understand. Although I am sure that the various arrangements you have made for me are intended for my benefit, they are too complicated for me to comprehend. I find it very difficult to have a lawyer so far away, and Mr. Bachrack is a gentleman whom I did not know. Undoubtedly he is an excellent lawyer, but I should prefer my own choice. I have selected Mr. Laurence W. Beilenson, 1124 Title Guarantee Building, Los Angeles, California, to represent me in the future. He has represented some of my friends for some years, and they are greatly pleased with his work. Please get in touch with him and arrange to inform him of what has been done, as well as turning over the necessary papers. I am grateful for your past services, but the distance between us is too great, and I see no necessity for having two lawyers. Sincerely, Greta Garbo" Signed Garbo Lawyer Letter Item #N144 - $4750 |

The New Oxford American Dictionary - Here is a new hardcover of the leading American dictionary. Produced by Oxford's U.S. Dictionaries Program, and drawing on the expertise of scores of American scholars and advisors, The New Oxford American Dictionary sets the standard of excellence for lexicography. Published in 2001. 2023 pages. 8 3/4" X 11 1/2" X 2 3/8"--Certainly one of the most accurate and richly descriptive pictures of American English ever offered in any dictionary. Oxford's American editors drew on Oxford's 200-million-word databank of contemporary North American English, plus the citation files of the world-renowned Oxford English Dictionary. Oxford started with what they call American evidence--an unparalleled resource unique to Oxford. The Oxford staff logged more than 50 editor-years, checking every entry and every definition. Oxford's ongoing North American Reading Program, begun in the early 1980s, keeps their lexicographers in touch with fresh evidence of our language and usage--in novels and newspapers, in public records and magazines. To provide unprecedented clarity, the entries are organized around core meanings, eliminating clutter and confusion, especially in longer entries. Rather than a litany of numbered senses, the structure of each entry plainly shows the major meaning or meanings of the word, plus any related senses, supplemented by illustrative, in-context examples of actual usage. In short, The New Oxford American Dictionary is designed to serve the user clearly, simply, and quickly, with a full measure of information value and precise guidance. Truly a revolution in the art and craft of dictionary-making, The New Oxford American Dictionary provides the in-depth and up-to-date coverage that all users need and expect--for reading and study, for technical terms, for language guidance. 1882--Opening of the Royal Courts - What a Great Find! Many of us when in London have visited the Royal Courts and walked through the grounds outside the different Inns of Court. Our copy is in extremely good condition. It runs 30 pages and is in the large 12" X 15 3/4" format. What makes it so special is that in text and illustrations it features the Courts' opening--designed by famous UK architect G.A. Street. Previously, the court was located in Westminster. The new court buildings were some 8 years under construction and design. It was with much anticipation when they opened. The text describes how throngs descended to see the attending ceremony--"From an early hour the railway stations disgourged heavily-laden trains from the suburbs and the country, and cabs soon became difficult to find..." The Lord Chief Justice was dressed in scarlet and ermine...the Queen came in from Winsor...the Japanese envoy was dressed in "a suit which seemed all gold...and the American in the severity of strict evening costume." But, what makes this issue so special are the 15 detailed and very clear illustrations showing just what transpired. One image shown on the left is the center spread. The other is not of the opening but is a copy of a painting by J. Morgan. Note that the client because he is unable to speak directly to the Barrister speaks through the solicitor. 1882 Opening of the Royal Courts Item # N397 - $145 |

Original 1930's Esquire Petty Girl - My Lawyer Wants Me to Change the Charge from Desertion to Insanity!!! We have found an original George Petty foldout from a 1930's Esquire magazine. Petty essentially created the pin up girl. His drawings of attractive females were VERY revealing for the time. But, with most in the US bogged down by the depression, Esquire realized their value and printed these drawings as full size on quality paper, and used them as inserts. To see more about Petty and Esquire see: http://www.bpib.com/illustrat/petty.htm. This original insert measures 18.5" x 14" and shows a redhead in a red suit with the caption "My lawyer wants me to change the charge from desertion to insanity". Good condition. No damage, only original crease, no tears. We have mounted it in a poster frame for viewing and safe keeping. You will want to frame this in a better frame with matting to fit your office decor. Japanese Movie-The Last Lawyer - This is a compelling lawyer drama--but for Japanese speakers or Chinese readers only!! Essentially, here is the plot. Moved by television shows of lawyers she saw as a child, Ryoko Ishida dreamt of nothing more than becoming one herself. Though she studied hard she was never able to realize her dream. Resigned to her fate, Ryoko later went on to work for a bank where she was put in charge of going after defaulted loans, the most detested job of them all at the bank. Told not to come back to the bank until she'd collected from at least one of the many deadbeat borrowers she was assigned to pursue, Ryoko reaches Kazuaki Yudo, a heavily indebted lawyer and the last person on her list. Operating out of a dilapidated home office, lawyer Kazuaki's work when he gets any mostly involves him serving as a court-appointed attorney to defendants unable to afford legal counsel. In other words, Kazuaki makes no money. But that is not why he's a lawyer. Like his newfound partner Ryoko, whom he soon teams up with (remember, he still owes the bank money, so she tags along with him no matter where he goes), they both share an intimate desire to protect the weak and defend the innocent, he is the people's Last Lawyer! This is a VCD set. High Quality. Can be viewed on most stand alone DVD/VCD players or computers with MPEG software support, ie PowerDVD or Windows MediaPlayer 8. BRAND NEW. Japanese dialogue with Chinese subtitles. Last Lawyer Japanese VCD DVD Item #N445 - $30 |
Gift for a Special Ohio Woman Lawyer Only - What a Special Gift!! Give to your Ohio female lawyer to say nice going for a courtroom victory; or, as a law school graduation gift; or, to acknowledge passing the bar; or, just because she is special to you. We obtained this original photo from an antique dealer. It is nicely framed in what appears to be an original frame, and truly is a piece of Ohio legal history. The tintype photo is elegantly matted and has a gold leaf frame within the large frame. But what is really special is the handwritten note on the backside of the framed photo. It is a very old description of who is pictured. She was one of the first women lawyers in Ohio! DO an internet search for her. You will find volumes. Miss Nettie Cronise was admitted to the bar in April, 1873, on recommendation of a committee of the bar, composed of George E. Seney, N. L. Brewer, R. G. Pennington, John McCauley and W. H. Gibson. Miss Cronise and her sister Florence (the subject here) were the first ladies admitted to practice law in Ohio. The older sister attended Heidelberg College and graduated in 1873. She was married to N. B. Lutes, who was admitted to the bar on the same day. Miss Florence Cronise (pictured) graduated from Heidelberg College in 1876, studied law with Warren P. Noble, was admitted as an attorney at law and practiced in Tiffin in Seneca County in Ohio. The Cronise family originally came from Baltimore or so says the note on the back. This is a very neat tintype photographic image -- an important piece of Ohio legal history! The frame is about 5 inches by 4.5 inches. Note that the photo image itself is a fairly small 2" X 1 3/4". Rare 1919 Book-Lawyer on Two Continents - We have just acquired a rare book describing a fascinating story. It is a story of a British lawyer, practicing in London, who at the age of 40 moved to Oregon in 1877. The book is: A Lawyer's Life on Two Continents by Wallis Nash. Published in 1919 in Boston by The Gorham Press/ Richard G. Badger. It is a First Edition. Very Good condition. Green cloth hard back with paper label on spine and embossed decoration on front. It bears the prior owner's name (Robt Weil) on inside front cover. No other writing, one page has a corner tear, no other tears, minor edgewear. The outer cover is lightly soiled, pages uncut. Internally there is some light foxing on the photos, endpapers mildly age-toned. 212pp; INDEX; illustrated with b&w photos and prints; frontispiece of Yaquina Bay, Oregon. The author lived in England where he knew Charles Darwin, (nice photo of Darwin in this book) among other famous people, and also lived for 35 years in Oregon. Here is what we found from a Google search on Nash: Wallis Nash operated an English law office with Judah Benjamin, the fugitive slaver, when a convict calling himself 'Colonel' Thomas Edgarton Hogg walked into Wallis Nash's English law office with a proposal: Hogg would pay Nash to come to Oregon and return to England, pretending to be a tourist who had somehow stumbled upon a golden investment opportunity in a remote little Oregon town. The 'investment opportunity' was Hogg's railroad scam. Nash was a man of few principles and made his trip and wrote his tract, actually a book intended to appear like the travel journals popular in his day.For more intriguing history about Nash and this rare book CLICK on http://www.corvalliscommunitypages.com/Americas/US/USNotOregon/wallis_nashbio.htm The book is separated into two parts: Life in the Old World and Life in the New World and covers: London Notabilities; Death of Edwin Wilkins Field; Sketch of Charles Darwin; The Invention of the Telephone; Life in Oregon; The Oregon Pacific Fails; The Oregon Agriculture College and The Great War etc. An overall nice copy of this rare book. 1919 Book--Lawyer on Two Continents Item #N456 - $85 |

For Argentine Lawyers Only - Special Card Honoring Mariano Moreno This card bears Moreno's portrait and the Argentine stamp issued on Dec 31, 1944, honoring him. Well known to all Argentines but not so well known outside Argentina. Here is a biography: Moreno lived 1778-1811. He became prominent as legal counselor to the royal audiencia and to the cabildo of Buenos Aires. His condemnation of the Spanish colonial system and his advocacy of liberal economic principles attracted attention. A leader in the revolution of May, 1810, which deposed the Spanish viceroy, he was secretary of the first revolutionary governing junta and exerted a significant influence. He founded on June 7, 1810 the Gazeta de Buenos Aires and, as editor, championed in its columns his democratic, reform ideas. In 1810 he founded the national library. His liberal policy provoked a conflict with the conservatives, who, in spite of his opposition, admitted provincial deputies to the junta; Moreno resigned (Dec., 1810). His resignation checked the democratic movement in the Rio de la Plata and initiated a protracted struggle between Buenos Aires and the country provinces. Appointed to a diplomatic mission abroad, he sailed for Europe (Jan., 1811) and died at sea. We have mounted the card in a heavy plastic stand for protection and easy viewing. Brand new in original shrinkwrap. Three books. Invasion of Privacy, Move to Strike and Unfit to Practice. 12 audio cassettes. About 18 hours of great listening. Read by Laurel Merlington. Legal Thriller Audio Tapes N518 Here are summaries of the books: THRILLER-LEGAL: Invasion of Privacy (Luann Kindem, engineer)Twelve years ago, a young girl disappeared. Now a filmmaker has made a movie about it. The girl's parents call it invasion of privacy. A woman lawyer calls it murder. The bloodstains on the courtroom floor belong to attorney Nina Reilly. Months earlier she'd been shot during a heated murder trial. She should have died that day. Instead, Nina has returned to the same Lake Tahoe court. Her only concession to her lingering fear is to give up criminal law. She figures an invasion of privacy lawsuit is a nice, safe civil action that will help her support her young son and pay the bills for her one-woman law office. She figures wrong. Move to Strike (Luann Kindem, engineer)Nina's not sleeping much these days. She's recovering from a great loss, haunted by a killer who may still be tracking her, and working on a tough new case. Her client is a sixteen-year-old girl charged with first-degree murder. Nikki Zack is a rebel, a thief, and the best friend of Nina's son, Bob. Did she steal something from her uncle, a prominent plastic surgeon, and then kill him with an ancient samurai sword? To help find out, Nina calls in private investigator Paul Van Wagoner, her ex-lover and constant ally, whose bravado doesn't betray his own sleepless nights. As they work through the twisting lies surrounding Nikki, it becomes brutally clear to Nina that she must pull an ace out of her sleeve in the courtroom to save her client, and solve the mystery surrounding Paul to save herself. Unfit to Practice (Melissa Coates, engineer)As an attorney championing desperate people, Nina Reilly has skirted the edges of legal ethics in pursuit of a just result but she has never before broken the rule of absolute protection of her clients' secrets. One September night at Lake Tahoe when her unlocked truck is stolen, her life changes forever. Inside are her most sensitive cases, complete with the sometimes brutally candid notes she took while interviewing her clients. It's the event that every attorney most fears - one careless moment that undoes a lifetime of building trust and respect. The worst has happened - the secrets are being revealed one by one, in ways that will cause the greatest harm. Nina's own clients complain to the State Bar of California, and suddenly Nina is fighting for her license and her livelihood in a Kafkaesque legal proceeding that may ultimately lead to her disbarment. - $29.95 |

Great gift for the young lawyer with the right message. We have framed this photo in a nice wood frame. Plot: Adapted by Don M. Mankiewicz from his own novel, Trial is a surprisingly timely story of how justice can sometimes be compromised by "special interests". It all begins when Mexican youth Angelo Chavez (Rafael Campos) is placed on trial for the murder of a white teenaged girl. Battling the lynch-mob mentality in and out of the courtroom is relatively inexperienced defense attorney David Blake (Glenn Ford). Believing that anything done on behalf of his client is for the common good, Blake approves the organization of an "Angelo Chavez Society" to pay the boy's court costs and ostensibly see that justice is done in the face of small-town prejudice. Soon, however, Blake discovers that both he and his client are being used as dupes by a Communist lawyer, who hopes that Chavez will be found guilty and executed, thereby creating a martyr for the Red cause.
